چکیده

Lactic dehydrogenase virus (LDV) associated with transplantable line Ib lymphocytic leukemia in C58iWm mice, K36 lymphocytic leukemia in AKRiJ mice, and the Gardner lymphosarcoma in C3HIHeJ mice elicited a fatal neuroparalytic disease when injected ip into 7to g-month-old X-irradiated indicator C58 mice. LDV associated with the WEHI-3B line of transplantable myelomonocytic leukemia or the Harding-Passey transplantable myeloma in BALB/c mice failed to elicit the disease. Recipients of such tumor extracts were immune to rechallenge by line Ib-associated LDV. Tumor lines free of LDV failed to elicit the disease or immunize recipient mice to line Ib LDV challenge. The Plagemann (P-LDV), Riley (R-LDV), and Notkins (N-LDV) strains of LDV were less neuropathogenic than the line Ib-derived strain (Ib-LDV). Indicator C58 mice that survived infection by the P-LDV, R-LDV, and N-LDV strains were immune to rechallenge by Ib-LDV. Antiserum prepared in young C58 mice to Ib-LDV or R-LDV protected indicator C58 mice from Ib-LDV challenge. These results show that a common viral contaminant of transplantable tumors and virus stocks that ordinarily is not pathogenic elicits a fatal neurologic disease in genetically susceptible, immunosuppressed, C58 mice.

Age-related loss of Lyt-1,2 cells in C58 mice results in susceptibility to lactic dehydrogenase virus-induced polioencephalomyelitis.

C58 mice (aged greater than or equal to 5 months) are susceptible to age-dependent polioencephalomyelitis, a paralytic central nervous system disease induced by lactic dehydrogenase virus. Susceptibility results from the loss of protective T cells. Data are presented showing a positive correlation between the age-related loss of Lyt-1,2 cells and the development of susceptibility to neuroparaly...

Selective antibody neutralization prevents neuropathogenic lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus from causing paralytic disease in immunocompetent mice.

Neuropathogenic lactate dehydrogenase-elevating viruses (LDV) cytocidally infect anterior horn neurons in C58 and AKR mice via interaction with endogenous murine retroviruses to cause a paralytic disease, age-dependent poliomyelitis (ADPM). The induction of ADPM requires a suppressed host immune system as a result of old age, genetic defects (such as nude mice) or any immunosuppressive treatmen...

FV-1 restriction of age-dependent paralytic lactic dehydrogenase virus infection.

A genetic analysis was made of the susceptibility of inbred mice to a paralytic disease elicited by the ip injection of a neuroparalytic strain of lactic dehydrogenase virus. The frequency of disease in susceptible inbred mice was X-ray dose and age dependent. Analysis of the susceptibility of appropriate F1 hybrids and their backcross progeny showed that susceptibility was not linked to the ma...

Involvement of CD4+ cells in the protection of C58 mouse against polioencephalomyelitis induced by lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus.

Immunosuppression, occurring naturally with aging, or experimentally after cyclophosphamide treatment or irradiation, is required for the development in C58 mice infected with lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV) of a severe polioencephalomyelitis that is caused by viral destruction of anterior horn neurons. Here it is shown that depletion of T helper lymphocytes by administration of an ...

Lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus variants: cosegregation of neuropathogenicity and impaired capability for high viremic persistent infection.

Neuropathogenic isolates of lactate dehydrogenase virus (LDV) differ from non-neuropathogenic isolates in their unique ability to cause a paralytic disease (age-dependent poliomyelitis, ADPM) in immunosuppressed C58 and AKR mice by cytocidally infecting their anterior horn neurons. We have recently reported that an original neuropathogenic LDV isolate, LDV-C-BR, contained a low level of a coexi...
